INTO THE VEINS OF BOEING 737 MAX CRASH
In August 2011, Boeing business Airplanes, a subsidiary of Boeing, declared the launched of its new 737 max aircraft as the fourth generation of the 737 line. On ten March 2019, a Boeing 737 max craft operated by Ethiopian Airlines crashed six minutes after takeoff, killing all 157 aboard. like the Lion Air incident from the year prior, the Ethiopian Airlines crash was widely reported. Coverage reported that the incident was similar to the Lion Air incident
The max has much larger engines, improving the fuel efficiency of the aircraft. but the undercarriage of the Boeing 737 is short, and it sits much lower on the ground than its more modern counterpart, the airbus A320.
Had the latest large engines been hung from the wings, as on previous versions, there would are insufficient ground clearance.
Instead, the engines were moved further forward and blended into each wing. while intuitively this sounds as if it should have made the aircraft “nose-heavy”, in fact the aerodynamic consequence was that the engine housing themselves generated lift and will tilt the aircraft upwards.
The designers concluded this characteristic increased the risk of a stall, in which the wings do not generate sufficient lift to keep the plane flying safely.
So they installed software known as the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS)
WERE PILOTS GIVEN ADEQUATE TRAINING?
When the max jet was under development, regulators determined that pilots could fly the planes without extensive retraining as a result of they were essentially the same as previous generations, according to The new york Times. This saved Boeing a lot of money on extra training, that aided the company in its competition with airbus to introduce newer, more fuel-efficient airplanes. The faa didn’t change those rules after Lion Air 610 crashed.
So rather than hours-long training sessions in giant, multimillion-dollar simulators, many pilots instead learned about the 737’s new features on an iPad. Pilots at United Airlines put together a 13-page guide to the 737 max, that didn't mention the MCAS.

The impact is becoming more pronounced as the grounding continues longer than expected. Airlines not only lack access to the more than 370 max jets that were in fleets worldwide at the time of the grounding but also the hundreds more they expected Boeing to deliver this year. The fuel-efficient planes are a key a part of these airlines’ growth ways.
American Airlines on wednesday said it canceled 9,475 flights in the third quarter because of the grounding order, which hit its pre-tax income by about $140 million. It expects to cancel 140 flights a day till it expects the planes to return, which would mean more than 14,000 cancellations in the fourth quarter and early january.
American reports earnings on October. 24. The airline had twenty four of the 737 max jets in its fleet at the time of the grounding and has seventy six more on order

The crash investigations are still in progress. we have yet to hear any information from Ethiopian Airlines 302’s black box beyond initial (and vague) reports about similarities to Lion Air 610. more details should emerge soon.
The us senate will convene a hearing on the FAA’s certification of Boeing 737 max jets on March 27th, Reuters reports. Boeing executives and officials from the faa are called to testify at the first congressional hearing on the twin crashes. they will likely be asked why the regulator united to certify the max planes in 2017 without requiring extensive extra pilot training.
On March 19th, Trump named stephen Dickson, a former Delta Air Lines executive, as his choice to become the permanent head of the faa. Dickson can no doubt face stiff questioning during his confirmation process, as more details about the agency’s certification of the max jets trickle out.
